If you have a website then you probably want to put your email address on the site so that people
can contact you. From this you can gain many genuinely useful enquiries about the products and
services you supply.
Unfortunately, in the same way that search engines scour the internet looking for useful information,
there are similar "web crawlers" or "spiders" which scour the internet looking for email addresses
to send junk email, or "spam", to. This can quickly result in a mailbox so full of rubbish that
useful requests for information can't be found.
Once you are on a 'spammers' list you will never get your address removed, even if you send them an email
asking to be removed, or follow there link saying 'remove me'. This is actually the worst thing you can do
as you are effectivly confirming that your email address is valid and somebody reads the email. Once this
happens the 'spammer' knows to include your address when sending out spam as they know someone will recieve it.
The best course of action when spam arrives in your mail box is to delete it without clicking on any of the
images or links in the email, as these will report back to the 'spammer' that the email address is valid.
There is software avaiable on the Internet (some free and some paid for) that help to filter out the spam
before it gets to your PC. This is a must is children are using the Internet and have an email address.
The software downloads the emails and then reads them for you, it will then use clever ways to work out
if the email is spam, if so it will delete it before it gets onto your PC. However there is a catch. The
software can't be too clever or it might start making mistakes and delete legitimate emails therefore it will
still allow emails through that it considers to be boarder line, it is then up to your to decide if it is really
spam.
